Buying a plant labeled “hardy to zone 7” means nothing until you know what zone you’re in. The system looks complicated. It isn’t. Here’s the two-minute version.
What a hardiness zone actually measures
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (used in the US and adopted in similar forms worldwide) divides regions by their average minimum winter temperature. Each zone covers a 10°F band, with “a” and “b” subdivisions for 5°F precision.

- Zone 1: -60 to -50°F. Arctic.
- Zone 5: -20 to -10°F. Cold winters – Boston, Chicago.
- Zone 7: 0 to 10°F. Mild cold – Washington DC, parts of UK.

- Zone 11+: No frost. Florida, Hawaii.
If a plant is labeled “hardy to zone 6,” it survives the average winter minimum of zone 6 (-10 to 0°F). Planted in zone 4 (where winters hit -20 to -30°F), it dies.
How to find your zone
- Go to planthardiness.ars.usda.gov (US) or your country’s equivalent.
- Enter your zip code or postcode.
- Read the zone number.
In the UK, the RHS uses a similar system (H1-H7) with H1 being indoor-only and H7 being fully hardy. Most of the UK falls in H4-H6.
How to actually use your zone
For container gardeners and renters: less relevant than you’d think. Containers can be moved indoors in winter, sidestepping the cold limit entirely. Hardiness mostly matters for in-ground perennials.

- Annuals don’t care. Tomatoes, basil, marigolds – they die at first frost anyway, that’s expected.
- Perennials must match your zone or colder. A “hardy to zone 6” plant works in zone 6 and below. A “hardy to zone 9” plant won’t survive zone 6.
- Container perennials can cheat. A zone-9 rosemary in zone 6 survives if you bring it indoors over winter.
Common questions about zones
Does my zone change as climate shifts? Yes, slowly. The USDA updated zone maps in 2012 and 2023, with many regions shifting one zone warmer. Your local plant centre is usually current.
What if I’m right on a zone boundary? Use the colder zone for safety. Plants survive being too cold-tolerant – they don’t survive being too warm-rated.
Do hardiness zones tell me anything besides cold? No. They don’t account for summer heat, rainfall, soil, humidity, or growing season length. The AHS Heat Zone Map covers heat; rainfall maps cover moisture. Zones are a starting filter, not a complete climate picture.
When zones don’t apply

Annual vegetables and flowers (most things people grow in pots and balconies) also don’t need zone matching – they live one season and die regardless. Match those to your growing season length, which is a different number entirely.
Putting it together
For most beginner gardeners, hardiness zones matter in three situations:
- Buying a perennial shrub, tree, or flower for the ground.
- Deciding whether a perennial herb (rosemary, lavender) can overwinter outside.
- Choosing fruit trees or vines.
For everything else – annual veg, indoor plants, container herbs you’ll bring inside – skip the zone lookup. Focus instead on sun exposure (see how much sunlight do plants need) and watering (see how often to water plants).
The bottom line
Find your zone once. Note it down. Reference it when buying perennials. Ignore it for everything else. It’s the simplest gardening lookup you’ll ever do.
Reading more than just the number
USDA hardiness zones use a simple number but the system has subdivisions worth knowing:
- Zone numbers (1-13): the broad band of minimum winter temperatures.
- “a” and “b” subdivisions: finer 5°F splits within each zone. Zone 6a is colder than 6b.
- Frost dates: related but separate – your zone tells you minimum temperatures, your last frost date tells you when spring planting is safe.
A plant rated “hardy to zone 6a” is more conservative than one rated “hardy to zone 6b.” Use the colder rating when in doubt.
The climate shift over the past decade
The USDA updated hardiness zone maps in 2012 and again in 2023. Many regions shifted half a zone or a full zone warmer between those updates. If you’re working from an older garden book, the zones it references may be obsolete for your area.
Practical impact:
- Plants that “shouldn’t survive” your zone often now do, especially in urban heat islands.
- Earlier spring frosts are less common; later fall frosts increasingly normal.
- Some traditionally summer crops grow longer than expected.
The official map is updated based on real data from past decades, so it’s reliable – just check that you’re using the current version.
Microclimate hacks
Within your zone, specific locations behave warmer or colder:
- South-facing walls: can run 5-10°F warmer than the surrounding area in winter, effectively giving you one zone warmer for plants placed against them.
- Frost pockets (low areas): can be one zone colder. Cold air pools in valleys and depressions.
- Urban centres: warmer than surrounding rural areas due to the urban heat island effect.
- Near large bodies of water: moderated temperatures, less extreme highs and lows.
If you can identify a warm microclimate in your garden, you can push the limits with plants normally too tender for your zone.
What zones don’t tell you about
Even with the right zone, plants need more than cold tolerance:
- Summer heat: the AHS Heat Zone Map covers this separately – some “cold-hardy” plants struggle in extreme summer heat.
- Rainfall: a plant rated for zone 7 in rainy England may struggle in zone 7 in dry inland Spain.
- Humidity: high humidity encourages disease in some plants regardless of temperature tolerance.
- Soil type: a plant’s zone rating doesn’t account for clay vs sandy soil preferences.
For accurate plant selection, combine your zone with awareness of these other factors. The local garden centre stocks plants suited to your area’s full climate, not just temperature.
